Counseling and Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy” and “counseling” are terms that are often used interchangeably.
Although they are very similar, there are some subtle differences as well. A common differentiation is that counselors concern them selves more with normative stresses, adjustment difficulties, and life transitions, whereas psychotherapist focus primarily on mental illness and psychological disorders Psychotherapy is defined as “A treatment by psychological means, of problems of an emotional nature in which a trained person  establishes a professional relationship with the patient with the object of

(1) removing,modifying, or retarding existing symptoms,

(2)mediating disturbed patterns of behavior, and

(3) promoting positive personality growth and development.”
